Everyone knows that the use of illegal drugs can harm the body and put other people at risk. There are hundreds of drug related deaths every day as a result of health issues, overdosing and accidents caused by driving while under the influence. These issues might put others at risks, but did you know that the use of illegal drugs can actually cause a massive strain on the heart?
A study conducted by the National Institute of Drug Abuse showed that there is a direct link between the use of illegal drugs such as cocaine, heroine, ecstasy and heart related illnesses.
Heart related illnesses that come as a direct result of drug use can include inflammation of the heart, heart attacks, infections of the heart, and heart murmurs. It is believed that because of the stimulants involved with these illegal drugs it causes the heart to become more susceptible to these types of diseases.
Due to the complex nature of the human body it is hard to tell how long a drug user needs to use drugs before they see heart problems. Some drug users have had problems since their very first time using, while others have been drug abusers for decades and have no heart problems at all.
With so much research backing the direct correlation between heart disease and drug use it can make a family or drug addict want to seek help. By entering a drug treatment center a person can learn to overcome their addiction and start to lead a healthy, normal lifestyle.
Without treatment of the addiction, drug users run the risk of facing heart attacks and potential death. If you suspect someone you love is addicted to drugs consider talking to them about seeking help or staging an intervention. Treatment is the only way to guarantee that the drug use will not affect the heart and cause irreversible damage.
